As you’ve no doubt heard, music legend Levon Helm died yesterday. You probably remember him as the drummer and vocalist of The Band or from his long solo career, but he also had a fruitful acting career, appearing in films like Coal Miner’s Daughter and The Right Stuff. The thing about Levon, for me, is how he conveys so much soul with seemingly so little effort. It just flies out. Take this clip from The Last Waltz, Martin Scorsese’s documentary on The Band’s final show. This performance has always given me chills, but today, some tears were added to the mix. And if you haven’t seen The Last Waltz…you know what to do.
PS: Mavis Staples, I love you so much.
