Hot dogs are one of my favorite foods. Being a bit of a hot dog purist, I like them simple with a little ketchup and mustard. That was until Snap Truck converted me to the Chicago style hot dog. Run by good PA friends, Liz and Zeph Courtney, Snap debuted their flame grilled fare earlier this summer. PA Thea and I finally checked out Snap in action last weekend and it was delicious.
We decided to split both the Chicago style hot dog and their daily special the Sonoran hot dog.
For those not familiar with this windy city specialty, a Chicago style dog is served on a poppyseed bun with yellow mustard, sweet pickle relish, chopped onion, tomato wedges, dill pickle spear, sport peppers and celery salt. It may sound like a lot but it all comes together magically. I’m not sure if I can go back to just ketchup and mustard after this.
I first had a Sonoran hot dog in Tucson last summer and it was pretty amazing. So, when I heard that Snap was featuring them, I was pretty excited. A Sonoran hot dog is wrapped in bacon, topped with chopped tomatoes, onions, shredded cheese, salsa, pinto beans, mayonnaise, ketchup and mustard, all served on bread. Snap definitely pulled this one off. I have to say, I still prefer the Chicago style but I’m definitely looking forward to the other specialty dogs they’ll be grilling up this summer.
To finish it off, we tried the avocado fries — panko crusted Hass avocado wedges, deep fried and served with a side of fresh chipotle mayo.
Deep fried avocado wasn’t something I would have ever really thought about eating but it definitely works. The panko crust is perfectly crispy and the avocado inside is warm and creamy. I was really pleasantly surprised by how much I liked these.
Check out Snap at the Hester Street Fair on August 6 and 13 or PARKED! at the South Street Seaport on August 20. You can also check out Snap online at www.snaptrucknyc.comor follow them on Twitter and Facebook.
