It’s High Time We Talked About Harry and the Potters

I feel like it’s been long enough.  We’re friends now.  You know that I heart Twilight, that I love videogames, and that I throw myself elaborately planned birthday parties.  You know that I am pretty much a dork.  And so, with that embarrassing and yet true fact out of the way, we can FINALLY discuss one of the secret heart of hearts things that I love: the wizard rock band Harry and the Potters.

You’re all “Melissa come on now.  Harry and the Potters?  WIZARD ROCK?”  Well one second because we actually have some Harry Potter Official Business to take care of before we get into H and the P.

First, have you guy heard about this new site of J.K. Rowling’s, called Pottermore?

No one really knows what’s up with it quite yet…there are some theories that it will be an online book retailer (boring), that it will be an HP themed online community (meh), or that it could be a Harry Potter online encyclopedia (…hmm.  ok).  Who knows what it will be…apparently J.K.’s  spokeswoman has said that it will definitely NOT be a new Harry Potter book, so really beyond that I don’t know what she could be planning that would be deserving of all this hype.  We will see.  In the meantime you can follow Pottermore on Twitter and watch the countdown (five days as of this writing) on Youtube.

The second bit of HP business we have to tend to is the SUPER AWESOME NEW TRAILER JMJ OMG:

Can you believe how badass Mrs. Weasley looks at the end of that trailer? Can you believe how lame the smooching scene between Harry P and Miss Ginny “Yawnsville” Weasley looks? I am buggin’, y’all. SO EXCITED.

NOW! Back to H and the P. Here are some fun facts about our fave Wizard Rock duo:

1. Started by brothers Joe and Paul DeGeorge, they go by Harry Year Four and Harry Year Seven.

2. They started the genre “Wizard Rock”. Because of them, we now have bands such as The Moaning Myrtles, The Whomping Willows, and a “rival” band called Draco and the Malfoys.

3. They play mostly in libraries.

4. They have an album called “Voldemort Can’t Stop the Rock”.

5. They have a song called “Maybe Kreacher Will Bring Me a Sandwich”.

6. The older brother, Joe (32), is a chemical engineer. They’ve been doing this band for a long time, ok? No judgy on Joe’s age you guys.

This is a fan made video for one of H and the P’s songs called “Harry Potter”. It is v v cute.

They have other songs that are not so “HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER”, but they are very lo-fi, something I consider part of their charm. One of my fave H and the P songs, It Ain’t Easy, has the best lyrics:

It ain’t easy bein’ Harry Potter
It ain’t easy bein’ me.

It ain’t easy when Professor Snape is always callin’ your name
And you don’t have any idea of how to make whatever he’s asking for
Cause it’s your first damn day of school!

Paul and Joe record and put out all of their own albums, they have their own record label and they started the Harry Potter Alliance that seeks to inspire social activism inspired by the themes of tolerance in the Harry Potter books. They’re awesome!

Harry and the Potters are touring this summer (fact: I will be at the NYC show with PA Tammy). Check them out live, or buy their albums via iTunes or through their site.

Voldemort can’t stop the rock!
