Can’t Wait for Six by Sondheim

The lovely and talented Audra McDonald

When it comes to naming my favorite musical, I find myself torn between Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar and Stephen Sondheim’s Company. But…when it comes to naming my favorite musical theater composer/lyricist/creator – hands down, it’s Sondheim. Where ALW sometimes ventures into over-dramatic schlock (which I still, admittedly, love), SS takes a subtler approach, all the while managing to strike a deeply emotional chord. If you’re a person who thinks she hates musicals – any Sondheim would be a great place to get your mind changed. The man is an unparalleled genius.

Monday, December 2nd at 9pm – HBO will be premiering Six by Sondheim – “an intimate look into his long and prolific career creating ground-breaking work that has redefined the musical theater.” The documentary features archival footage featuring legends like Bernadette Peters – and also performances that were recorded specifically for the film from such varied auteurs as Darren Criss, Audra McDonald, America Ferrera, Jarvis Cocker (yup) + more. Check out a (very) brief sneak peek below in the HBO Docs Fall Series Preview.
