Animals Ask People: Jamie Shupak

Jamie Shupak, in Shareen Vintage

First things first: I’m not a morning person. At all. One of the few bright spots between the alarm clock and my iced coffee is watching the morning team on NY1 – the deadpan delivery of Pat Kiernan, the goofy antics of Roger Clark, the no-nonsense sass of Annika Pergament …and most of all, the delightfully cheerful and ever-stylish Jamie Shupak! As NY1’s morning Traffic and Transit reporter, Jamie delivers vital morning info to New Yorkers with a smile (+ some bonus hilarious banter with Pat Kiernan ), but did you know that she’s also a food blogger and a novelist? Read on and fall even more in love with Jamie Shupak in this installment of Animals Ask People!

Tell us about what you do and why it rules.
I have the best job in the world. I get to deliver the traffic report to the city of New York (on NY1) every single morning, all while making jokes with Pat Kiernan. I wake up early (3:24 a.m.) but it’s a lot of fun and I’m done at noon every day. What could be better? I also have a food blog (TV Dinner) which is like my baby, where I show, or like to think I show, how easy and fun it is to cook healthy meals at home. And these are healthy meals that taste good – with no meat or dairy. I eat fish and eggs, so I’m not vegan, but I never have chicken, pork, steak – you get it. Avoiding meat and cheese just makes me feel better. Scripps is currently making TV Dinner into a Web video series – we just shot the first ten episodes – so soon you’ll see it come to life. Or at least come to whatever video player you run on your computer. I also have a novel, TRANSIT GIRL, coming out November 19th.

What do you like most about your neighborhood?
I’ve been in the West Village for about 8 years and I am so in love with it – everything about it. I love how quiet it is. I love the cobblestone streets. I love how many dogs and trees there are. I love the restaurants, the boutiques and all the people. And there are Citibikes everywhere! I’m slightly obsessed with the bikes.

What’s the last thing that moved you to tears?
Probably something in Friday Night Lights. We’re in the middle of bingeing on the whole series right now and it’s amazing. Hi, Tim Riggins!

What’s your favorite accessory?
I was going to say definitely the Cartier Love bracelet that my boyfriend Brian gave me last year on our first anniversary, but now it’s a toss-up between that and the diamond necklace he gave me on our second anniversary in September. I know, he’s a keeper!

What’s your go-to karaoke song?
I don’t really have one because I’m not usually up late enough for karaoke. But when we were in Portland, Oregon in June we stumbled into a bar holding Rock Band Tuesday. I sang Fun.’s “We Are Young” and totally brought down the house.

What’s your adult beverage of choice?
Tequila (Patron, Espolon, Don Julio or Siete Leguas) on the rocks with a splash of lime juice.

Read anything good lately?
Sisterland, by Curtis Sittenfeld. It was so good and I just found out that ABC might be turning it into a TV series. So read it before then!

What’s your go-to take out spot?
Okay this is a really sad story. For 8 years I had been ordering sushi from Sakura Hana, this delicious, most wonderful, casual place in the ‘hood. I had the same order for years and they never did me wrong. Then one day a few months ago, without notice, it closed. That’s it. No goodbye. No one last hurrah with their chopped toro appetizer that’s so good it makes your whole face melt. No, nothing. I’ve been on a mission to find a replacement take out sushi place and while Yama is solid, it’s not the same. Any recommendations? Or can anyone please bring Sakura Hana back?

One designer to rule them all?
It’s impossible to choose just one, so how about three? Head-to-toe I’d mix Rag and Bone, Alexander Wang and Isabel Marant. Then I’d top it off with some of my Bubby’s (grandmother) jewelry, which I inherited and is the absolute best.

What shoes do you wear for an all-day outing?
I wear cowboy boots all day, every day, no matter what the occasion.
