Whit Stillman and I must have the same taste in leading ladies. Greta Gerwig, the star of his latest film Damsels in Distress, was a past G.C. of mine and now, Carolyn Farina from his first film is my newest G.C.! In Metropolitan, Farina plays Audrey Rouget – a sweet (but not feeble) heroine who stole my heart from the minute she entered in her ill-fitting white lace gown and amazing haircut.
If you haven’t seen Metropolitan, I highly recommend it! It’s as if all of the smart parts of Gossip Girl were condensed into one well-written screenplay in a world where “preppy” was the old “hipster” (I may or may not have been led to this analogy by a character named Serena). Intellectual lulz, amazing fashion, great acting, young love – it’s all there. And bonus: it’s one of the rare Criterion films streaming on Netflix! Check out the trailer:
