Spied it, Tried it: Ice Pops by La Newyorkina

After reading the New York Times article about New York’s New Frozen Treats, I decided I had to have La Newyorkina‘s famed Mexican ice pops – or paletas – and planned a trip to the Hester Street Fair. I was hoping for the avocado flavor, but would have been just as thrilled to try fresh coconut, mango chile, tamarind, or cucumber lime. Avocado wasn’t on the menu, but strawberries and cream was and it was amazing! It was cool, creamy, fruity, and just the right amount of sweet. PA Nina had mango chile and was equally impressed.

La Newyorkina is Fany Gerson, a native of Mexico who has lived in New York for the past decade and authored two cookbooks: Paletas: Authentic Recipes for Mexican Ice Pops, Aguas Frescas & Shaved Ice and My Sweet Mexico: Recipes for Authentic Pastries, Breads, Candies, Beverages, and Frozen Treats. I’m dying to try out her paletas recipes on my own, but am doubtful that I can recreate the magic of her frozen treats.

Visit La Newyorkina this summer on Saturdays at the Hester Street Fair or check out her cookbooks on Amazon.
