On a recent trip to L.A., I visited The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA. The raw, airy space – formerly a police car garage – was given a delicate renovation at the hands of Frank Gehry in 1983. The museum’s interior is bright and open and a lot of the exhibits are essentially in the same space and not really divided into rooms. Because of this, I was haunted by these chirping female voices and spastic audio sweeps for most of the time that I was there, not knowing from whence it came. Eventually, I hit the loft-like upper level and found the culprit!
This video piece by Charlie White, entitled “OMG BFF LOL” is part of his Girl Studies series. There are three parts of “OMG BFF LOL” – Mall, Bathroom and Bedroom – all of which you can watch through his YouTube channel. I recommend starting with Mall, since Bathroom and Bedroom are a little darker and will make more sense with the context of Mall. The piece deals with themes of consumerism, marketing disguised as entertainment and general ennui. Watch Mall for yourself and see what you think!
