There are loads of interesting, cute, or quirky boutiques tucked away in the Lower East Side. It’s always fun to take a stroll in the neighborhood on a sunny day to check out what’s new. I thought I knew the hood pretty well, but the last time I was there I discovered Maryam Nassir Zadeh, a store that’s been firmly anchored on Norfolk near Rivington for the past couple of years. The glass warehouse storefront alone draws your eye – I honestly don’t know how I missed this shop before. The space is a revelation, the kind of place that you want to steal for yourself and turn into your cool artist-type apartment.
I’m going on about the look of the shop only because it’s so very unique that it sets a certain gallery-like tone. Maryam Nassir Zadeh is not just a clothing boutique, or a jewelry store, or a newfangled gallery, it’s a little bit of each. The clothes is sparingly displayed with different designers highlighted in each section. Shoes are strewn throughout the shop in clusters on the floor, on benches, or framing an architectural column. Jewelry – mostly the hard kind that PA Nicole loves to love – is draped over tables next to sculptures and other artwork. The collection is composed of pieces from a wide range of designers, from Rachel Comey to Isabel Marant and Hussein Chalayan. It’s definitely on the expensive side of the spectrum, but I still think it’s worth a visit.
You can check out their stuff on the Maryam Nassir Zadeh website, but I really recommend you visit the store at 123 Norfolk St, it’s an experience worth the trip.
